Energy World May 2016

Nearly 60 years on from the birth – in the UK – of nuclear power, the problems of plant decommissioning and the final disposal of nuclear waste have still to be solved. This issue starts with a series of features on nuclear, including an article on how Britain’s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority is addressing that waste legacy, with all its technical challenges. Research is being helped by, among others, scientists at the UK’s synchrotron facility, Diamond Light Source.

We also take a look at nuclear newbuild, in the shape of an article from the developer of the proposed Moorside plant to be built in Cumbria – NuGen.

Energy storage is our second theme. Marc Height vists an experimental battery storage facility in the Midlands, while researchers from Newcastle University argue that storage needs to be seen as an important component of a flexible energy system. We also take a look at the regulatory and cost challenges for this fairly new technology.

And we still have room for articles on geothermal energy in Indonesia, China’s solar power industry, as well as energy efficiency initiatives now that the first ESOS compliance deadline has passed.
