Energy World October 2014
Welcome to the October issue of Energy World, the second with our new refreshed look, and this time with a focus initially on the demand side of energy – specifically in buildings.
One concept referred to several times throughout our feature articles is the ‘performance gap’ between a building’s forecasted energy use and the energy it uses in practice. Liz Reason likens this phenomenon to that of cars being designed to pass test track emissions tests, and then underperforming in real-world driving conditions. See page 16.
We look at progress, or lack of it, towards a UK zero carbon homes target by 2016 (see page 14); as well as greener and more efficient technologies for heating and cooling buildings – see pages 18 and 21.
We then turn back to energy supply from page 28, where Tim Probert gives a progress report on new nuclear in the UK. We look at plans to revive the search for a geological disposal facility for nuclear waste on page 30.
Finally, we have another new feature with the magazine this month – turn to the centre pages to find the first of a series of pull-out infographics on energy and its interactions with society. Pull it out and pass it on!
