Renewable power plant conversion completed in Ontario

Decorative image New
Ontario, Canada is now home to North America’s largest power plant fuelled completely by biomass, following a conversion which saw the fuel stock for the plant change from coal. The Atikokan Generating Station is now generating electricity completely by biomass and last burned coal in September 2012.

As part of the modifications two silos (pictured) to house the biomass were installed, and the plant’s boilers were modified. The biomass used to fuel the plant is being harvested and processed in Ontario.

The plant is a peaking power plant, and so will be turned on when the electricity demand is highest in Ontario. It will run on around 45,000 tonnes of wood pellets per year.
