Following the US shale boom, the big question is ‘Where next?’ Three special reports examine the prospects for unconventional resources elsewhere and ask ‘Boom or gloom?’
Faced with volatile oil prices and challenging political environments, similar questions are being asked about more conventional oil and gas developments in Africa and the Middle East. Nigel Bance looks at Nigeria’s ambitious plans, and Maria Kielmas paints an alarming picture of operations across North Africa. However, prospects look more promising in Ethiopia. Furthermore, analysts address the maze of government-led requirements for IOCs planning to collaborate with African NOCs and/or local participants.
On the technical front, a fuel additives expert considers the implications of using a European approach to cold flow standards in the US. While Mark Rowe suggests new synfuel technology can overcome concerns about food vs fuel land-use surrounding biofuels.
A new Siemens report highlights the daunting skills gap in our industry. Moreover, the Energy Institute joins forces with industrial, academic and political leaders to run the POWERful Women (PFW) initiative to encourage more gender diversity in the industry. Indeed, nothing was more encouraging than meeting several ‘Future Energy Champions’ at IP Week. The future looks bright whatever the current challenges.
