We have two very different main themes in this issue. On the energy demand side – strategies to reduce energy use in homes and buildings; and, on the supply side, nuclear power.
Two articles from page 14 onwards cover the evolving energy performance of UK homes and prospects for further improvement, particularly following the effective ending of the zero carbon homes standard and the Green Deal. The latter article describes an alternative domestic refurbishment programme adopted in the Netherlands which is, maybe, transportable to the UK.
Three articles on nuclear power cover changing priorities in human resourcing for the industry; the gradual emergence of smaller, modular reactor designs and their possible adoption in the US; and a new idea for the safe disposal of nuclear waste – very deep boreholes.
