US wind growth

The total installed wind power capacity in the US grew at a rate of 8% in 2014 to reach 66 GW, according to the 2014 Wind Technologies Market Report from the US Department of Energy (DOE) and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

The US is second in the world (after China) in terms of total wind capacity, and wind power now meets around 5% of US end-use electricity demand in an average year, says the report. It also finds that US wind energy prices are at a record low and are competitive with wholesale power prices and traditional power sources across many areas of the US.

A separate report looking at smaller-scale, distributed wind in the US says that the cumulative installed capacity of distributed wind is around 906 MW. According to the 2014 Distributed Wind Market Report from the DOE and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, 74,000 distributed turbines are installed across the nation.
