Five nuclear units in Japan are to be retired, rather than be brought back online

Five nuclear units in Japan are to be retired, rather than be brought back online with more stringent safety provisions, as reactors are gearing up to come back into service following Japan’s Fukushima incident of March 2011.

The Mihama 1 & 2 PWRs and the Tsuruga 1 BWR in Fukui prefecture, as well as the Shimane-1 BWR in Shimane Prefecture, and the Genkai-1 PWR in Saga Prefecture, will all be retired.

The total reduction in operational capacity is 2 GW, leaving 40 GW of capacity capable of being operated in Japan. The first unit of 23 that are progressing through restart applications and checks could become operational in July, reports World Nuclear News.
