Solar

Apple has invested $848mn in a power purchase agreement for 130 MW worth of a 280 MW solar project in Monterey County, California. The deal, the solar industry’s largest ever of its type, made by the world’s biggest company, will see the computer company take power from First Solar’s California Flats Solar Project under a 25-year agreement.

Joe Kishkill, Chief Commercial Officer for First Solar said: ‘Apple's commitment was instrumental in making this project possible and will significantly increase the supply of solar power in California.’

Construction of the 1,200 ha California Flats project is expected to begin in mid-2015 and to be completed by the end of 2016. The output of the remaining 150 MW of the project will be sold to Pacific Gas & Electric under a separate long-term agreement.
