Solar

Alongside constant headlines on the falling costs of solar power, new PV capacity is being installed worldwide at substantial levels.

Nearly 900 MW of solar capacity was installed in India in 2014, with double that amount forecast for installation next year, according to clean energy consultancy Mercom Capital Group.

The 883 MW installed in 2014 was down 12% on the 1 GW installed in 2013, but Mercom is forecasting 1.8 GW for 2015 due to new projects being announced and those already in the pipeline. India’s Modi government has set a goal for 100 GW of solar capacity by 2022. The industry has installed 3 GW in the last five years.

A large portion of 2015 installations are expected to come from India’s 700 MW Phase II of Batch 1 projects, due for commissioning in May. India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) recently released a draft for the ‘Batch 2’ of projects of 3 GW. MNRE also plans to set up 25 solar parks, each with a capacity of 500 MW or larger, aiming for 20 GW of installed capacity in these parks over a span of five years.
