UK calls for 'good' biofuel plants

The government is to offer a £25 million prize for most viable demonstration of making liquid fuel from waste organic material such as straw or wood waste. Since the 1960's many attempts to manufacture liquid fuels from water have been made but none of them have reached the standard of being commercially viable. Ministers believe research has now reached a stage where advanced biofuels will be possible commercially. Norman Baker, the Liberal Democrat transport minister told the Guardian: "It's hugely important that we decarbonise transport. We have been up hill and down dale on biofuels in the past few years. What we need to do is distinguish between good biofuels and bad biofuels, and this competition will produce good biofuels. A winner of this competition could be announced within the year depending on the number of bids lodged.
