Earthmovers

Much ink (and no small amount of trees) has been devoted lately to carbon capture and sequestration (CCS). Permanently storing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in suitable underground formations must be done in order to avoid environmental calamity, according to the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have increased from 280 ppm to 382 ppm, mostly due to the 28bn tonnes of CO2 emitted annually by mankind. Whilst many believe that CCS is the main solution to avert catastrophe, what doesn’t get as much attention is geo-engineering - the imaginative array of lternative methods to reverse climate change.
Gordon Cope outlines some of the major proposals put forward so far.
