Shallow water flow---a technology update. G.H. Medley. Pipeline Gas Ind., Deepwater Technol. Supplement, August 1998, 81(8), 37--47. (6 pages).

Problems of shallow water flow (SWF) are described in deepwater drilling operations in the Gulf of Mexico. Technology for dealing with SWF is reviewed. Special cements, cement additives, and cement placement techniques are recommended for shutting off SWF in deepwater drilling applications. Unconventional methods for casing installation are described and illustrated. Permeability impairment is discussed in relation to high-density fluids and fluid modelling and future plans are reviewed. These include development of a field plan for bottom-driven casing installation, use of a hydrostatic pressure profile, riserless drilling, a dual density mud system, and development of a subsea rotating head and choke system. 11 refs.
