Improve automatic tank gauging of floating roof tanks. P.E. Myers. Hydrocarbon Processing, May 1998, 77(5), 52--58.

Automatic tank gauge (ATG) technology used by Chevron is reviewed. Data for seven tanks are tabulated and ATG and manual measurement errors are compared. A device to seal the gap between the roof and tank shell is described and illustrated. Measurement errors are discussed and modelling to understand the magnitude of discrepancies is described. Results show that rim seal forces cause significant errors in volume measurements in aboveground storage tanks. Areas of tank technology discussed are double deck floating roofs, annular pontoon floating roofs, internal aluminium floating roofs, impact on custody transfer, stock loss and inventory, volumetric and mass leak detection. 4 refs.
