Re-engineering refinery systems---the next desktop. J.P. Kennedy. Hydrocarbon Processing, September 1996, 75(9), 75--78.

The consequences of downsizing a refinery operation are reviewed. It is shown that reorganization often involves removal of entire staffing levels and exposes limitations in ageing software. Choices of infrastructure are discussed and two-tier and three-tier designs of component architecture are described and illustrated. An example describes implementation of a suggested approach but commercial components are often more complex than the situation discussed. Support systems for refinery operations are reviewed. They include monitoring and data feedback to advanced computerized control systems. Difficulties in developing desktop control systems are described but when designed properly they are more flexible and functional. 2 refs.
