Reduce accidental releases of hazardous materials. D. Ledbetter. Hydrocarbon Processing, September 1996, 75(9), 113--118.

Recent US legislative requirements are discussed. A new Risk Management Programme (RMP) described measures required to reduce the likelihood of accidental releases of hazardous chemicals. RMP objectives are usually based upon worst case scenarios and some conflicts in the implementation of compliance requirements are considered. A new development is the introduction of excess flow valves to prevent accidental releases of hazardous materials. This is an inline control device that senses excessive downstream flows. Operating features are described. Commercial uses of excess flow valves are discussed in relation to the transportation of ethylene oxide for polymer production, and in the handling of anhydrous and aqueous hydrogen chloride. 8 refs.
