Accuracy of wind and wave forecasts. J.S. Hopkins. Offshore Technol. Rept., OTH-483, publ'd 1997, Health Safety Exec. HSE Books, figs., tables, 27 pages, price #25 (ISBN 0-7176-1420-4).

The main seasonal and geographical variations in waters around the UK are presented. Their origin being the collation of statistics compiled by the UK Met. Office for verifying offshore wind and wave forecasts. It is useful, for aspects of risk analysis, to know the possibility of a specified threshold being exceeded, when a forecast below that threshold has been made. Hence, the raw verification statistics have been converted to possibilities of threshold exceedance as a function of forecast period out to 120 hours. Consideration is given to the importance of RMS error and bias, together with examples. Both tabulated and graphical data are presented and discussed. 10 refs.
