MOU signed on UK-Ireland electricity link A 5 GW electricity link which would export renewable electricity generated from wind farms in Ireland to the UK could become a reality following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to complete a pre-feasibility study for the development, financing, construction and operation of such a transmission system. The agreement, between the UK’s National Grid; Redes Energéticas Nacionais (REN), Portugal’s transmission and system operator working with the State Grid Company of China; and the global wind and solar developer Mainstream Renewable Power which is leading the export project, could see a link, named ‘Energy Bridge’ built by 2017. Mainstream Renewable Power launched the Energy Bridge initiative in June of this year and is currently engaging with landowners in Ireland to secure the land required to start constructing the first 1.2 GW phase of the project.
