Energy Institute votes in new EI President At the Energy Institute’s (EI) Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 7 July, Joan MacNaughton CB HonFEI, Senior Vice President - Power and Environment Policies, Alstom Power, was appointed the new EI President for 2011-2013. Joan has been an influential figure in the energy and climate policy debate in a variety of UK, European Union and international roles. As Director General of Energy at the former Department of Trade and Industry, she delivered several major changes and made a significant contribution to international energy policy, including overseeing the energy agenda during the UK Presidency of the EU and leading the work on the energy part of the climate change proposals agreed at the G8 Gleneagles Summit. Since 2007, Joan has been with Alstom Power, spearheading the company’s clean power advocacy - to advance clean, sustainable energy and reduce power generation carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. In response to her appointment, Joan said: ‘I am honoured to be taking up post as President of the Energy Institute. There can scarcely have been a time when the contribution the EI makes has been more important - whether in driving up the professional skills needed in the energy sector or helping to ensure a better informed debate about the energy challenges we face. I’m looking forward to contributing to the Institute’s important work.’ Joan has a degree in physics from the University of Warwick. From 2004-2005, she chaired the Governing Board of the International Energy Agency (IEA). She is a Senior Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, a board member of the Carbon Capture and Storage Association (CCSA), International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), and the International Advisory Board of the Energy Institute of University College London. She is also a member of the Policy, Regulatory and Legal Steering Group of Global Carbon Capture and Storage Institute (GCCSI), and of the Board of Governors, Argonne Laboratory at the University of Chicago, where she chairs the Budget Committee. In 2006, she became a Companion of the Order of the Bath. Petroleum Review will include an interview with Joan in its October issue. Energy Institute recognition - Melchett Award The Energy Institute (EI) recently gave the prestigious Melchett Award to Professor Allan Jones FEI, UK Country Director of E.ON Engineering. The Award is made in recognition of an individual’s outstanding contribution to the study or advancement of the science of fuel and energy. Allan is a fuels, combustion and emissions expert with almost 35 years’ experience in the field. Previously to his current role, he held the position of Head of Research and Development for E.ON UK, where he personally contributed to the recruitment, mentoring and development of young graduate engineers and scientists. Following his work on technologies to reduce dust emissions from oil-fired utility boilers, Allan was the recipient of the Royal Society Esso Energy Award in 1988. He was presented with the Institute of Energy Caleb Brett award in 1997 for his work on demonstrating the viability of Orimulsion as a reburn fuel to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. His contribution to energy related R&D was also recognised in 2006 by his appointment as Visiting Professor at the University of Nottingham. Allan continues to make an important contribution to energy research through numerous industry bodies, including as Chairman of the Combustion Physics Group of the UK Institute of Physics, Director and now President of British Flame, Director and Vice President of the British Coal Utilisation Research Association, Chairman and founder member of the UK Coal Research Forum, a member of the UK Government Advisory Committee on Carbon Abatement Technology and a member of the UK Advanced Power Generation Technology Forum. He is also a board member for the UK Energy Technologies Institute and sits on the Research Advisory Committee of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) of the US. Held after the EI AGM on 7 July (see pXX), the Melchett Lecture saw Allan present an interesting overview of activity in the UK power sector since the 1970s, using coal-fired power generation to illustrate the advances made by R&D over the years. He paid particular attention to the progressive clean-up of the coal combustion process and highlighted the new challenges facing coal as it fights for a place in the UK’s future energy mix. Past recipients of the Melchett Award include Professor Jim Skea OBE FEI in 2010, Andrew Warren FEI of the Association for the Conservation of Energy (ACE) in 2008 and Vincent de Rivaz FEI of EDF Energy in 2006.
