Chevron fined $8bn over Amazon 'contamination'

An Ecuadorian judge has fined Chevron $8bn for contamination of the Ecuadorian Amazon basin through dumping of polluted waste water. The lawsuit against Chevron ran for 18 years on behalf of 30,000 local people who alleged their health and environment were damaged by chemical-laden waste water dumped by Texaco's operations from 1972 to 1990 (Chevron bought Texaco in 2001). The company has denounced the ruling and plans to appeal, commenting 'It is the product of fraud and is contrary to the legitimate scientific evidence'.
