Barack Obama has nominated Nobel Prize winner Dr Steven Chu as his Secretary of Energy. Chu, the current director of the Department of Energy (DOE)’s Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory (LBNL) has been credited as an early advocate for finding solutions to climate change. Under his guidance LBNL has increasingly focussed on low-carbon R&D, including research on renewable energy and biofuels. Obama also established a new position in the White House, the Assistant to the President for Energy and Climate Change. Former administrator of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Carol Browner has been selected for the position. Browner is said to have ‘brought the climate change issue to the forefront’ during her time at the EPA. Commentators have described the pair as a ‘green dream team’.
