A Japanese government research committee on energy development is reported to have proposed that Japan increase the level of its independently developed crude oil against imports from the current 15% to 40% by 2030. However, the panel has also recommended that Japan reduce its dependence on oil from 50% to 40% of the domestic energy mix by 2030. Specifically, it has called for using more alcohol-based and other alternative fuels so that the transportation sector's near total dependence on oil will fall to 80%. Other proposals include a 30% improvement in energy use efficiency through the reduction of power consumed by home appliances and the development of cars with better fuel economy. The panel also proposes that nuclear power meet more than 40% of the Japan’s energy consumption in the future.
