A Year of Engineering

As the Year of Engineering draws to a close the EI has been proud to be a supporter of what has been an inspiring initiative celebrating the exciting world of engineering.

Led by the UK government, the Year of Engineering has aimed to encourage more young people, especially young girls, to consider a career in engineering and related professions. With support from hundreds of organisations, initiatives and activities across the UK have taken place throughout the year to capture the imagination of the next generation.

As part of Tomorrow’s Engineers Week from 5-9 November, the EI sponsored the Big Assembly – a live-stream to almost 50,000 students across over 400 schools, all taking part simultaneously.

The assembly heard from an inspiring panel of engineers who discussed their careers and the positive impact engineering has on the issues young people care about most – from protecting the environment to entertainment. The Big Assembly is available to view at bit.ly/2QlL0eW

Earlier in the year the EI took part in the Big Bang Fair – the UK’s largest celebration of science and engineering for young people. Taking on the theme of Energy Superheroes, the EI polled young people on their knowledge of key energy and climate change issues. The results revealed a generation switched-on and ready and willing to take responsibility for humankind’s impact on the planet.
