Energy World September 2016

Offshore wind is the energy success story of our age, with the UK leading the way, several European countries also making waves and the first offshore turbines being installed in US waters about now. So we include in this issue three articles that cover how the industry is successfully cutting its costs to make offshore wind increasingly competitive; a round-up of the UK industry, particularly the latest and largest ‘Round 3’ projects; and two initiatives aimed at better connecting Europe’s offshore turbines to the shore.

Offshore wind’s first cousin marine energy, in both its wave and tidal forms, is also covered, in an article that looks at how European developers are moving beyond R&D to demonstration and even commercial-scale installations.

We also include a couple of articles on energy management. First, one industry participant gives his views on how UK energy prices are likely to move, and whether Brexit is a force for change. Second, National Grid explains how it is encouraging companies to take on demand side response measures as a way of keeping energy costs down. Two final articles cover this year’s Melchett Lecture and the developing role for women in the energy industry.
