Threat to veto real emissions test

MEPs are threatening to veto planned new European Union (EU) real driving emissions (RDE) tests that EU governments approved on 28 October, reports Sara Lewis. MEPs oppose the new system allowing exhausts to emit 110% more nitrogen oxides (NOx) than limits in laboratory tests. 

The row threatens the European Commission’s response to the Volkswagen ‘dieselgate’ scandal – bringing forward the RDE test. But while member states’ Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles (TCMV) accept the new system, MEPs dislike the tolerance given non-compliant vehicles. The parliament’s Greens/European Free Alliance said it ‘certainly’ would propose a veto, seeking cross-party support. This followed the parliament saying it was ‘deeply concerned’ by delays by member states and the Commission in following up ‘evidence of serious and persistent exceedances of emissions limit values’ in the dieselgate scandal.
