Petroleum Review June 2015

The oil and gas sector has cautiously welcomed the newly elected UK Conservative government under Prime Minister David Cameron, but warned there are still serious challenges ahead, as highlighted in this month’s news pages.

Meanwhile, the relationship between the European Union and Russia over the siting of new pipelines and pricing remains strained, while Russia’s annexation of Crimea last year looks to be prompting a reform of Ukraine’s gas sector. Our Russia and Eastern Europe feature also assesses hopes for a new gas province developing in the Black Sea, where development of oil and gas resources depends as much on NATO-Russia relations as it does on oil prices.

This month’s issue also looks at the challenges facing the UK power sector and what the ‘Big 6’ utility companies have planned for the future; prospects for the commercialisation of power-to-gas; and new opportunities that are developing for the UK’s nuclear industry.

Moving upstream, the magazine outlines how the development of kerogen oil shale is fuelling Jordan’s energy transformation and assesses how the oil price collapse is forcing ineffi ciencies out of the drilling and oilfi elds services sectors while driving technological developments focused on maximising economic recovery of reserves.

We also looks at some of the new challenges facing Europe’s gas and power trading sector, and outline why reform of the EU Emissions Trading System has become a necessity for it to maintain its relevance.
