Japan could achieve significant GHG reductions

The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) has released new research showing that Japan could achieve much stronger climate targets than the much criticised proposal the government announced in late April. At that time, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s government indicated that Japan would cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 26% below 2013 levels by 2030, which equates to an 18% cut from 1990 levels. In contrast, the IGES study, conducted in partnership with the Open Climate Network, found Japan could achieve 25–30% reductions from 1990 levels depending on the country’s share of renewables and nuclear.
