Energy Insight - Sources of energy information - statistics and basic industry facts
The EI Knowledge service has used many of the following sources for information while compiling the Energy Insights
If you need historical information, the EI Library holds publications containing statistics, and industry facts, dating from the mid 19th century to the present day.
This insight is divided into three sections:
- International - sources containing information about many countries
- National - sources containing information about individual countries
- Subject - sources concerned with a limited subject matter
International
Energy Institute Statistical Review of World Energy - (from 2023) The Energy Institute Statistical Review of World Energy™ analyses data on world energy markets from the prior year. Previously produced by bp, the Review has been providing timely, comprehensive and objective data to the energy community since 1952
BP Statistical Review of World Energy (until 2022) Published annually from 1952, statistics from 1965 are available from BP’s website as pdf and Excel spreadsheets - covering production, consumption and trade of oil and gas; coal; renewables – hydro, solar and nuclear; and electricity.
(Early editions from 1955 onwards are available for reference in the Energy Institute Library)
Central Intelligence Agency - CIA CIA: World Factbook Information about most countries including population, economics, politics and energy resources.
International Energy Agency IEA Data and statistics - oil, gas, coal, renewables; energy policies, Energy Projections of IEA Countries – with Extended Transitions Indicators
Oil and gas Journal - Statistics on the oil industry very comprehensive, but no longer freely accessible to non-subscribers.
OPEC
- OPEC Bulletin (monthly)
- OPEC Annual Statistical Bulletin (annual) World wide statistics, and also separate statistical tables for the current OPEC countries
United Nations Energy Statistics Yearbook
Statistics published annually for over 200 countries, but data 3 years behind when published. Each volume holds 4 years of statistics for oil and gas, coal, electricity; production and consumption, etc. (Hard copy statistics are available from 1950 in the EI Library.)

Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy - BEIS:
- Digest of UK Energy Statistics (DUKES) (annually in July) brings together all documents relating to DUKES: coal, petroleum, gas, electricity, renewable, combined heat and power.
- Energy Trends (quarterly) data on the supply and demand of all the major fuels in the United Kingdom.
