Prelude FLNG begins journey to Australia

Shell’s Prelude floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility left the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard in Geoje, South Korea on 29 June 2017, marking a significant milestone for the project. The facility, constructed by Technip Samsung Consortium, is being towed to North West Australia, where the next phase of the project will begin.

On arrival at the Prelude offshore gas field, 475 km north-north east of Broome, Western Australia, pre-installed mooring chains will be lifted from the seabed and secured to the facility. Once secure, the hook-up and commissioning process will begin.

The FLNG facility is the largest offshore floating facility ever built, with a production capacity of at least 5.3mn t/y of liquids – 3.6mn t/y of LNG, 1.3mn t/y of condensate and 0.4mn t/y of LPG. Shell holds a 67.5% interest in the project, partnered by Inpex (17.5%), CPC (5%) and Kogas (10%).
