Energy World July/August 2017
Power generation has changed. No longer solely the territory of large, centralised fossil fuel plants, we now see a mixture of smaller and decentralised plants joining the system – fuelled by a wider range of fuels. Our power feature in this month's issue therefore includes articles on inconsistencies with coal-fired generation in Europe, a project to cable the output of a Wisconsin wind farm to load centres in California, and the growth of small-scale hydropower in Southeast Asia.
We then move to heat, more accurately thermal energy, with articles on district heating and the solar thermal sectors in the UK, and new refrigerants proposed for cooling plant. We also include a piece on efforts to decarbonise the heat sector, informed by this year’s Energy Barometer from the EI itself. You can also turn to page 14 for a complete overview of energy priorities from EI members measured in this year's Barometer report.
Do you know yet about blockchain and its potential to revolutionise energy trading? It's a term that is appearing more and more. See page 34 for Marc Height’s account. Finally, the series of articles from EI overseas branches continues this month with news from Dubai and the Middle East
