Generator refurbishment in a hurry

Decorative image New

Engineers at the Sulzer UK Service Center in Birmingham say they have completed a contract to rewind a damaged 19 MW generator from a UK waste-to-energy scheme and return it to operation within just 30 days.

An initial inspection of the generator showed that the stator had suffered from a coil shorting to earth on the turbine side of the winding, as well as suspected damage to the stator core. Working quickly to minimise downtime, the generator was removed to the local service centre and dismantled overnight to allow the rotor, stator and coils to be tested.

By using the latest CAD software, new coils were formed to ensure an exact fit in the stator slot and, once a damaged core tooth was repaired, the new coils were installed. Following testing of the new coils, together with refurbishment of the rotor, the generator was re-assembled and tested, before its return to site.
