TotalEnergies and OQ, the Oman national oil company, have reached a final investment decision on the Marsa LNG project, the companies have announced.

Marsa LNG, a partnership of TotalEnergies (80%) and OQ (20%) established in 2021, aims to develop a 1mn tonne capacity LNG project serving as a bunkering and export terminal in the Port of Sohar, Oman.

TotalEnergies has also signed a sale and purchase agreement with Oman LNG to procure 800,000 t/y of LNG for 10 years from 2025, making the company one of the main off-takers of Oman LNG’s production.

The required feedstock for the plant will come from the 33.19% interest held by Marsa LNG in the Mabrouk North-East field onshore Block 10, providing 150mn cf/d of natural gas.

LNG production is expected to start by 1Q2028 and is primarily intended to serve the marine fuel market (LNG bunkering) in the Gulf.

TotalEnergies (49%) and OQ Alternative Energy (51%), the national renewable energy company, have also confirmed they are at an advanced stage of discussions to jointly develop a portfolio of up to 800 MW, including a 300 MW solar project that will cover 100% of the annual power consumption of the Marsa LNG plant.

That means that the site will become one of the lowest greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity LNG plants ever built worldwide, with a GHG intensity below 3 kgCO2e/boe, a tenth of conventional LNG plants, according to the developers.
