Petroleum Review July 2011

E&P activity in Canada and the US is back on trackwith a number of new prospects emerging, oil sands expansion programmes stepping up and the Gulf of Mexico drilling moratorium being lifted ahead of schedule. However, a number of challenges and opportunities remain and thismonth’s issue outlines some of the strategies thatUS companies could adopt in order to remain competitive going forwards.

This issue also includes our annual LNG megaproject update which indicates that the excess production capacity that had resulted from the large capacity increments commissioned in 2009 and 2010 is already starting to erode. We also take a closer look at gasto- liquids (GTL) developments, including the recent coming onstream of the Pearl GTL facility in Qatar and the ‘coming of age’ of floating LNG concepts.

This month we also assess how Europewillmeet its greenhouse gas emissions targets whilst ensuring affordable energy supply and provide an overview of a project that is aiming to ‘crack’ the issue of carbon capture at refineries.

We also report that recent strong earthquakes in the Circum-Pacific region have illustrated that the vulnerability of modern cities to natural disasters is greater than previously assumed. Other articles focus on the planned reform of Bangladesh’s tanker breaking sector and the rapid development of the maritime passive safety industry, which is seeing a shift in the direction of oil spill protection.
