Petroleum Review June 2011

The drive into deeper waters and new onshore plays to meet rising global demand for energy has led to the development of a new generation of drilling rigs and drillships that are pushing the boundaries in terms of their technological and operational capacities. This month’s issue takes a look at some of the latest designs to enter the on- and offshore markets and provides an overview of the key trends impacting this sector.

This issue also explains how gas trading in Europe and the US works, and considers what action is needed in order to further improve liquidity in a nascent pan-European gas trading system. It also looks at the potential gains that could arise fromplans to synchronise the European Union and Swiss emissions trading systems.

Recent E&P developments in Latin America and the Caribbean are reviewed this month. The issue also assesses how innovations in recently commissioned combined-cycle power plants in Europe could help smooth the integration of renewables into the energy mix. We also visit the problem of microbial growth in fuel supply and distribution systems and highlight an innovative graduate training scheme developed for the nuclear sector that is now looking to encourage new talent to enter the oil and gas arena.
