Petroleum Review June 2012

This month’s issue reviews some of the recent advances in drilling technology for the development of deeper and more challenging environments offshore, as well as the new processes needed for unconventional resources like shale gas. We also look at the differences between fiscal regimes in the UK and Norway, and how they effect E&P development in the North Sea.

The future of oil and gas trading is discussed as we examine how price expectations by governments, distributors and end consumers in Europe will affect the trading tactics and strategies of suppliers. Meanwhile, although a low carbon price and an economic downturn have led carbon trading in the EU into some difficulty, we explain that there is more positive outlook for schemes outside of Europe.

We also look at the recent expropriation of Repsol’s YPF subsidiary and the shadow it has cast over new prospects in some parts of Latin America. In Brazil, we discuss how pressure from a strongly nationalist government, anxious to use oil as an engine for development, is making life difficult for the IOCs currently operating in the country.

The magazine also reviews LNG prospects in Trinidad and Tobago – blessed with gas reserves and resources, the country has the potential to capture a new market through the development of smaller-scale LNG solutions for the local Caribbean and Central American region.
