Petroleum Review August 2012

This month we review developments in northern Europe’s bulk storage sector, which, despite current eurozone problems is still showing signs of growth in the ports of Amsterdam, Rotterdamand Antwerp (ARA), the main oil and petrochemical hub for the region. Meanwhile, in the Asia-Pacific, congestion and lack of space at the port of Singapore means terminal operators are looking across the water to see what peninsular Malaysia has to offer.

Our analysis of this year’s BP Statistical Review of World Energy shows that although oil prices soared to record levels during 2011, production growth slowed markedly to 1.33%. Gas supply and demand also slowed, but less dramatically, while coal supply and demand powered ahead. However, the energy ‘star’ in 2011 was renewable energy with a 17.7% gain.

Faced with ageing infrastructure offshore and extended lifecycles, the oil and gas sector has seen stringent demands for improved planning, monitoring, inspection, maintenance and corrosion management. We outline the key challenges facing the sector and highlight Energy Institute guidelines that have been published in order to address these issues.

The magazine also reviews some of the legal issues associated with piracy, shipping and oil and gas operations.
