Energy World March 2013
Large offshore gas fields in remote areas require a different method to extract and transport the resource. One solution involves liquefying the gas, but with the difference of compressing it into LNG out at sea rather than at the coast. Some technical challenges still need to be overcome with floating LNG production – see how Shell aims to approach this in what will be the world’s first FLNG project, centered on the breathtakingly large Prelude vessel, on page 20. Elsewhere, this issue looks at gas, both conventional and unconventional. After a success story in the US, what are the prospects for shale gas development in Europe – and in the UK? And what is the potential for gas storage in the UK?
We then move to the demand side and energy management – from examining the recent changes to the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme, to examples of good monitoring practice in Oxfordshire schools, and low energy LED lighting in several types of building.
