Petroleum Review January 2014

We begin the New Year with a review of the challenges and opportunities facing the constantly evolving oil and gas industry, a sector where major shifts in energy demand are being seen as emerging economies develop. We look at the role underground coal gasification (UCG) technology will play in unlocking a new source of lowcarbon ‘syngas’ in the future and outline how the European Union’s current biofuels investment strategy appears in disarray as it struggles to find a way forward.

The key issues of sustainability and energy efficiency are also touched upon in this month’s issue and we outline how water could play an influential role in shaping the future energy supply mix.

We explain how oil and gas companies can ensure business success by focusing on three pillars of operational performance – people, assets and information. A review is also presented of the final form of the UK government’s recently published decommissioning relief deeds – reportedly the first time any government has entered in to legally binding contracts with individual companies to guarantee the tax relief they can expect decades into the future.
