Energy World November 2014
Smart grids – the main theme for this issue – is a loose term covering the gradual evolution of transmission and distribution systems for electricity into something altogether more modern and flexible; able to accommodate new renewable and distributed generators and to allow electricity consumption to be optimised against cost, security and environmental criteria.
Electricity storage features both on the front cover and in an article on UK energy storage on page 18. We also include articles on how high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology is increasingly used in transmission systems; and the poorly connected state of Europe’s power grids.
Our second main feature is energy used for transport. Leaving electric vehicles aside for once, we look at the merits of hydrogen fuel cells, LPG and LNG, including bio-LNG. Moving out to sea, how much do you know about ship propulsion? We cover the growing use of hybrid electric systems.
The issue also includes the usual home and international news sections.
Last, the second in a series of three ‘infographic’ sections is bound into the middle of the magazine.
