World’s largest solar-powered desalination plant

The world’s first large-scale desalination plant to be powered by solar energy is to be developed in Saudi Arabia.

The plant will have the capacity to desalinate 60,000 m3 of seawater per day for the local community – Al Khafji in North Eastern Saudi Arabia. Advanced Water Technology (AWT) selected Abengoa to develop the $130mn project. AWT is a recently formed company based in Riyadh focused on the sustainable production of affordable water solutions.

The 15 MW PV plant will reduce the operational costs of the desalination process compared with conventional technology, says Abengoa. It comes with a system to optimise power consumption and a pre-treatment phase to reduce the high level of salinity and the oils and fats that are present in the region's seawater.
