OMV commenced operations at the extended butadiene plant at its refinery in Schwechat, Austria

As part of a drive to focus increasingly on petrochemical production at its refinery sites, OMV commenced operations at the extended butadiene plant at its refinery in Schwechat, Austria, in early May. Increasing the facility’s butadiene capacity by 30%, means the refinery can now produce 60,000 t/y of butadiene. The company is also building a new butadiene facility at its Burghausen refinery in Germany, which is expected to enter operation in 2Q2015. Butadiene is a key material in the chemical industry, used mainly in the automotive sector and for producing tires.

Global change in the refinery sector means that petrochemical derivatives are playing an increasingly important role internationally, alongside traditional oil products such as diesel, heating oil and fuels.
