New fossil power plants in the US, Germany, the Philippines

A new gas-fired combined-cycle power plant is to be built in Pennsylvania in the US which is to be fired on local shale gas. The 829 MW Siemens H-class gas turbine ‘Patriot’ plant will comprise two power islands and will be erected by Gemma-Lane Patriot Partners. The plant will be built in Clinton Township in Lycoming County. It is scheduled for completion in 2016.

Elsewhere, Siemens has completed a record-efficiency coal-fired power plant in Germany. The 750 MW Lünen power plant has an electrical efficiency of 46%, and Siemens describes it as the most efficient and cleanest hard coal-fired power plant in Europe. It is also a combined heat and power plant, supplying the city of Lünen with district heating. The plant, pictured, was built as a turnkey unit under a consortium arrangement between Siemens and IHI Corporation.

Finally, a new gas-fired combined cycle power plant is planned for the Philippines; in Batangas City in the Calabarzon region, about 110 km south of the Philippine capital of Manila. The Siemens 414 MW San Gabriel Combined Cycle Power Plant is set to be the most efficient in South East Asia, according to the company. The combined-cycle plant, which has a planned efficiency of over 60%, will be built for First NatGas Power a 100% owned company of the Philippine independent power producer First Gen Corporation. Siemens will operate the plant.
