Brownfield Estate Mosaic

Decorative image New
Award-winning community mosaic artist, Gary Drostle, joined schoolchildren in Poplar, London to unveil his latest interactive artwork on the unusual canvas of an electricity substation.

Named ‘Electron Flow’ the artwork represents a spark of electricity round UK Power Networks’ building in Willis Street, on the Brownfield Estate, near Langdon Park. At night an electroluminescent strip around the substation will light up, encircled by rainbow-coloured mosaics. Local schoolchildren made a film about the area to view on smartphones by scanning the artwork’s Quick Response code.

Daniel Kinslow, from UK Power Networks property and consents team, said: ‘We are delighted to be part of this project which has turned an ordinary brick substation into an inspiring work of art. What impressed us most was the way Gary’s design has engaged the local community.’
