In US, the government’s efforts to improve fuel economy and to reduce reliance on imported oil has led to an improvement from 16.6 L/100 km in mid 1970s to 8.2 L/100 km in 2004. The plans include corn-distilled ethanol, biodiesel from used fats and vegetable oils, hydrogen, exhaust gas recirculation systems, and tax incentives for advanced technology consumers.
In UK, long-term tax breaks are recommended, and in Europe, such tax incentives may be based on limits to particulate emissions.
