N Wilks, The green car debate, Professional Engineering, 23 February 2005, p 33

In UK, a conference hosted by the government-sponsored Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership recommends that car buyers be made more aware of the environmental implications of their car design and their own driving practices. Europe-wide per car pollutants have reduced significantly due to replacement of old models, but the increase in car population means that total emissions have changed little. From September, all new vehicles will be graded in terms of energy efficiency, as with refrigerators and other domestic appliances, together with an estimate of fuel costs for a total of 12 000 miles (19 300 km) driving. More use of diesel, hybrid vehicles and biofuels is also recommended. Government policy should concentrate on long-term goals, not just taxation.
