In UK, Ricardo is taking overall responsibility for the development of a hybrid delivery van employing a downsized diesel engine aimed at cutting fuel costs and emissions. The project is based on the Ricardo I-MoGen mild hybrid diesel vehicle using a downsized 1.2 L turbo diesel engine giving the power of a 2 L engine. Since torque is low at speeds below 1500 min-1, a Valeo’s Flywheel Mounted Electrical Device (FMED) is used to boost response. Energy from regenerative braking and a “stop and go” strategy is stored in a Saft nickel metal hydride battery.
