In US, NASA is proposing a Jupiter Icy Moons Orbiter (JIMO), known as Prometheus, powered by a nuclear fission reactor feeding electric thrusters. Radioisotopes may offer alternative power sources, and electricity generation may be by thermoelectricity, photovoltaic, Stirling engines or Brayton cycle turbines. Large radiators are envisaged in order to expel the unusable heat to space.
