Our existing homes - fit for the 21st Century? Dr Paul Ruyssevelt. Energy World, October 2008, p. 10-11.

The development of low energy and zero carbon design for new homes is all very well, but the refurbishment of existing homes is a more pressing matter, writes Dr Paul Ruyssevelt. Energy use from our 26mn homes still accounts for nearly one third of the UK's carbon emissions. In a century of climate change and rising energy prices, our existing housing could turn out to be our greatest liability. Estimates vary, but it is likely that over 80% of these homes will still be standing and occupied in 2050. If we are to have any hope of meeting the Government's target of a 60% cut in carbon emissions by 2050, action needs to be taken to start tackiling our existing housing stock, and fast.
