Oil refining and transport industries operating within the European Union (EU) will be under further pressure to produce cleaner fuels and less polluting vehicles through a new air quality directive setting strict limits for ultra-fine particulate matter in air (PM2.5). This is the first time these tiny,health-damaging particles have had specific limits in the EU. Diesel emissions from road transport are seen as the biggest single cause of air quality legal breaches.
