The September issue of Energy World contained news of the launch of extensive Government-sponsored trials of the use of intelligent ('smart') energy meters, involving four major energy suppliers and 15,000 households. Smart meters are expected to be rolled out to most households within the next ten years, and to all but the smallest businesses in the next five years. Here, Jonathan Elmer of technology supplier Ampy Metering describes the compelling financial case for smart meters and how their introduction will bring innovation to the UK energy sector.
