Modern ‘smart meters’ are now being installed in a number of countries, but the UK energy meter stock has not changed significantly in over a century - in marked contrast to many other technologies which have changed beyond recognition. Advanced metering technology has been talked about for 30 years in the UK, but the subject has been given a new impetus by the EU Energy End-Use Efficiency and Energy Services Directive, an Ofgem consultation and the 2006 Energy Review.
However, a lack of clear commercial drivers and the current policy and regulatory framework is inhibiting technological change according to a report published by Sustainability First. The work was sponsored by five of the major UK energy suppliers, energywatch, the Energy Saving Trust, Ampy and IBBM Consulting. Gill Owen reports.
